Handbags and purses are some of the most popular fashion accessories you can use to accentuate and complete a desired look or fill a particular need. But with so many styles and trends to choose from it can often seem daunting to choose the right handbag at any given time, either day or night. Every new outfit or occasion can seem to call for a different color or style of bag, so it can be difficult for even the most seasoned and well-versed fashionista to ultimately decide which one to carry when it’s all said and done. To help with choosing which particular purse or handbag may be best to use at any given point, it’s very helpful to have at least a basic understanding of the most common types/styles of handbags available out there to choose from. While these of course don’t include EVERY type or style of handbag that’s out there to buy, these are some of the most prominent styles you’ll most likely see out there when shopping for a new purse yourself:

Crossbody/Messenger: A Crossbody, or sometimes referred to as a messenger bag, is a wide bag with a long strap. It is made to carry across the body. These bags typically have a flap that covers the top opening. It can be used for many situations, and are a great option for students to use for carrying school books.

Backpacks – Backpacks are very popular bags which are also beneficial to students of all ages, though of course not exclusively. Back packs have two straps which make them better suited for carrying relatively heavier loads since there is a balance of pressure of both sides of your shoulders and back (as opposed to just one with most other types of handbags).

Tote Bag – Tote bags are very popular because they are casual yet very practical. These bags usually fall in the middle of the body, around the elbow. They are big and provide a lot of space for the user. They usually only have one or two compartments and are available with a number of images on them or a simple solid color.

Clutch/Wallet – A clutch or wallet is a handbag which does not have handles and is meant to be carried in the hand. That said they are usually quite small and only provide enough space for the bare essentials which you feel you most need at the time. These bags can be casual or dressy and are often worn to parties or nightclubs because they are so small and efficient.

Duffel Bag: In it’s original form the duffel bag is a cylindrical bag made of cloth, with a draw string closure at the top, but the term is now used to describe a wide variety of soft sided bags which are longer than they are wide (roughly cylindrical or trunk-shaped), and are luggage-sized rather than carryon/weekend type bags — usually at least 8″ x 8″ x 16″

The right handbag for you personally will ultimately depend on your style and personal preference. You will probably feel the need to change the style of handbag you carry on a regular basis depending on the need/occasion, outfit wearing and even your mood at the time which can vary widely from day to day.
